What personal data we collect and why we collect it

    Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

    Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

    Contact forms

Data is not stored other than to deal with the content of the forms without your consent. For donation forms see the donation section.

    Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

    Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

Who we share your data with

We do not sell or pass on your data other than with services we use embedded in this site for advertising or traffic analytics including conversion tracking. These service providers are Facebook and Google. The services may include remarketing which sets a cookie on your browser (or Facebook pixel) allowing the future targeting of you or similar audiences in our advertising.

It is possible to opt out of these services with the service providers by going to :

    Google’s Ads Settings.

Alternatively, you can point your visitors to opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page.

While we allow these services to use our site and benefit from their presence on it, we are not in direct control of that information. That is the reason for needing to opt out with the major third-party vendors if you are not happy to receive interest based marketing materials online.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

    Online Donations

Donation transaction data is kept for a period of 5 years to comply with administrative, legal, or security purposes requirements. After 5 years your data will be anonymised in order to prevent you being explicitly identifiable.  We will keep record that there was a transaction and the amount and date. However, we will not keep any name, address, email, or phone data. The only exception is where you have opted in to be contacted. See next section. In this instance we will keep your details (but no longer linked to your transactions that are older than 5 years) until such time as you may choose to opt out of communications.

At no stage do we store your credit card details. Our site never sees your credit card data. That is handled through our payment gateway on their site.

Your donation data is not shared in an identifiable manner with any third parties other than as legally required or with our payment gateway provider or which is necessary to process the donation payment. This may be waived with your consent.  Only the minimum required information is shared with the payment gateway and does not include email address or phone details.

    Opting in for communication

If you opt in for communication, you will remain opted in indefinitely until such time as you may change your mind and ask to be removed.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

    Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
